The feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael today

Today’s liturgy celebrates the important roles of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael in the divine plan of salvation. Tradition holds that angels are messengers of the divine plan of salvation. Tradition holds that angels are messengers of the divine and their work is cited in the Bible. However, only Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, are specially given importance because their names are mentioned. For this reason, they are referred to as “the Archangels.”

Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince” who defends Israel against its enemies. In the book of Revelation in the New Testament he leads God’s armies to final victory over the forces of evil.

Gabriel also appears in Daniel’s vision, but his best-known appearance is when he announced to a young Jewish girl named Mary that she was specially chosen by God to be the mother of the Savior. It was also Gabriel who announced to Zechariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist. Raphael is mentioned in the book of Tobit, where he is sent by God to guide Tobit’s son Tobiah through a series of extraordinary adventures which lead to a happy ending.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, let us reminded of what the Church teaches us in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession.” “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life…” Here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” (CCC no. 336). Let us therefore seek their help in times of our need. They are God’s messengers. We can communicate with God through them. God makes his presence felt by us through them as well.

May our celebration today make us realize that we have co-journeyers in this life and sure guide to the righteous path.
