Del Rosario defends US envoy’s statement

Manila, Philippines – US Ambassador Harry Thomas was merely dramatizing the serious situation of human trafficking in the Philippines when he stated that about 40 percent of foreign tourists come to the country for sex, said Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Albert del Rosario.

Thomas, likewise, indicated that Philippine authorities should also focus on people who prey on minors and groups that are into cybersex, del Rosario said.

Appearing before senators in yesterday’s public hearing on the proposed 2012 P10.988 billion DFA budget, del Rosario said that Thomas, during their conversation last Sunday, “pointed out some deficiencies in terms of our existing relationship which he hopes can be addressed in dealing with the problem in a holistic basis.’’ (Mario B.
