Manila, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) needs some P2.39 billion to implement national recovery and rehabilitation projects for victims of tropical cyclones and floods in the last five months.
Based on DSWD data, flashfloods displaced 187,008 families or 932,839 people in the National Capital Region (NCR), Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Northern Mindanao (Region 10), Davao region (Region 11), and Socsargen (Region 12) last May. It said that tropical cyclones that entered the country, “Falcon” in June, “Juaning” in July, “Mina” in August, and “Pedring” and “Quiel” in September affected 1.4 million families nationwide.
The P2.39-billion recovery and rehabilitation fund will be sourced from the DSWD’s quick response fund. “The amount will be used for projects, which are designed to address the socio-economic needs of the affected families and communities,” DSWD Secretary Corazon J. Soliman said. (Ellalyn B. de Vera)
