Foton reigned supreme in Pool C of the 2016 Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup as it ran through the erstwhile unbeaten Petron-XCS, 21-9,21-8, yesterday at the Mall of Asia Sands By the Bay in Pasay City.
The hard-hitting pair of University of Santo Tomas star and former UAAP beach volleyball champion Cherry Rondina and veteran hitter Patty Orendain surprisingly pulled off a rout against the veteran tandem of Aiza Maizo and Bang Pineda.
The win allowed Foton to complete a sweep of the group as they won their third game in the classification phase after beating Accel Quantum Plus and Mapua.
Rondina was left unfazed as she peppered Maizo and Pineda with killer hits, sending waves across the tournament that they’re a team to watch out for.
“I-nenjoy lang namin. Nilabas lang namin ang natutunan namin sa ensayo kasi napraktis namin yan,” said Rondina after the match.
“Communication at teamwork lang. Ienjoy lang kasi alam namin na magagaling din sila at beterano sila,” she added.
While Foton now has the luxury to head into the quarterfinals unbeaten, fans of Petron-XCS need not to worry as they advanced to the quarterfinals as well with a 2-1 record.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals is Standard Insurance – Navy led by the tandem of Norie Jane Diaz and Pau Soriano. (Christian Jacinto)
