Mom, baby die in road crash

IMUS, Cavite – A young mother and her baby girl died on Monday while two others, including a minor, were injured when the tricycle they were riding collided with a car driven by a teen student on Daanghari Road in Barangay Pasong Buaya 1, this capital city.

Superintendent Redrico Atienza Maranan, city police chief, identified the fatalities as Cristy Aquia Bernardo, 21, and her one-year-old baby, Althea Venice.

Injured were Haina Aquia Bernardo, 3, another daughter of Cristy; and Roberto Paloma Ligtas, 69, driver of the tricycle.

The mother succumbed to body injuries while being treated at De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC) in Dasmariñas City. Her baby was declared dead on arrival at the same hospital.

Haina, who also sustained injuries, was confined at the DLSUMC while Ligtas was also brought to a hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

Police Chief Maranan said that the car driver – John Leo Condition Chavez, 19, a college student and resident of Capitol Hills Subdivision, Trece Martires City, Cavite – was held at the police station after the accident at 9:45 a.m. Monday.

Charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injuries (in relation to Republic 7610) and damage to property were filed against Chavez at the prosecutor’s office, according to Maranan. (Anthony Giron)
