The child of a friend of mine has been advised by their family doctor to eat bananas regularly. As in daily, several times a day.
The child has been diagnosed with a rare type of temporary paralysis that affects his movement. He lacks potassium, and whenever this lack manifests, he wakes up unable to move, or get himself out of bed.
His parents tell him, ‘Go eat as many bananas as you can. Ang sarap naman ng gamot mo!’
Still, the child is reluctant to eat his medicine. I wonder why some people can’t develop a liking for bananas. Di ko ma-gets.

Bananas are a good source of vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber. They are good for cardiovascular health.
Bananas are a good source of potassium, an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Since one medium-sized banana contains 400-plus mg of potassium, the inclusion of bananas in your routine meal plan may help prevent high blood pressure and protect against atherosclerosis (a disease of the arteries characterized by the deposition of plaques of fatty material on their inner walls).
Bananas have digestive benefits.
Bananas have low glycaemic index (GI) value. GI measures the impact of food on our blood sugar. This low GI value for bananas is most likely related to two of their carbohydrate-related qualities.
Since bananas are a good source of potassium, and since low potassium levels are known to contribute to risk of muscle cramps, it is logical to think about the potassium content of bananas as being the reason for fewer muscle cramps after consumption of bananas.

In the United States, the most familiar varieties are Big Michael, Martinique and Cavendish.
Locally, we have lacatan, latundan, and saba varieties. The banana you see on the sidewalks of Tagaytay is the so-called señorita, small and cutie pie, but just as sweet as the rest of them.
People I know swear by the taste of saba, eaten either boiled, fried or raw.
