IT seems almost natural that people would be afraid of sharks.
From their appearance alone, they project fierceness. Giant teeth, gaping mouth that could swallow an entire village.
It doesn’t help that movies like “Jaws” have shown sharks as dangerous creatures of the sea.
Then again, sharks are said to be not as dangerous as many people think.
In JUPITER, FLORIDA, scuba diving guide Randy Jordan reportedly enjoys an unlikely friendship with an 8-foot long lemon shark whom he’s named Blondie.
Their friendship started in an unusual scenario. During a dive, the shark came close to the diver and looked like it wanted to be petted.
Jordan said, “She recognizes me as soon as I go in the water and runs over to me. It almost looks like she’s smiling. She doesn’t want food, she just wants to be petted.”
“If you don’t give her the attention, she’ll bump into you. You have to attend to her. That’s just the way she is. It is strange,” he added.
Jordan offers a theory why sharks like Blondie wanted to be close to people.
“I’m not a scientist, but I know sharks have a nerve centre under their snout and, when that’s stimulated, it puts them into a semi-catatonic state. I think they enjoy it the same way a cat enjoys to be petted.”
Jordan assumes that not all sharks are dangerous. Some of them only want to befriend people. (Info from http://dailytimes.com.pk/)
