San Sebastian seeks to resume its sweep bid as it clashes with an unpredictable Jose Rizal in the women’s division of the 92nd NCAA volleyball tournament today at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.
Powered by reigning MVP Grethcel Soltones, the Lady Stags overpowered the Emilio Aguinaldo Lady Generals, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22, Wednesday to nail their fifth straight win and remain the only unbeaten team.
Unlike seasons before though, Soltones was far from her deadly form as she was not in full strength, averaging just 16 points, second only to league scoring leader Francesca Racraquin of San Beda, who is norming 17 hits a game.
San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb though is expected to go more to his hardworking support cast headed by Joyce Sta. Rita and Katherine Villegas, who both averaged in double digits.
“This sport is a team game so we have to perform as a team and not rely too much on individual talent,” said Gorayeb.
The Lady Stags have the chance to sweep the single-round elimination that will catapult them straight to the best-of-three finals.
If it happens, it will reduce the Final Four to a stepladder semis wherein the Nos. 3 and 4 teams battle in a knockout duel with the winner taking on the No. 2 squad, which will enjoy a twice-to-beat edge.
