Woman hurt in blast

A 22-year-old woman was injured after she accidentally tripped on an Improvised Explosive Device in Lamitan, Basilan Sunday.

Army Col. Elmer Suderio, commander of the 3rd Army Scout Ranger Battalion, identified the victim as Asdali Nura Awwali of Barangay Sabong, Lamitan. Awwali was taken to the Lamitan Hospital and is in stable condition.

Suderio said the incident happened at about 2 p.m. He said Awwali accidentally tripped on the IED in the vicinity of Barangay Sabong, beside the area where the convoy of the 74th Infantry Battalion and 18th Infantry Battalion was about to pass for logistical run.

He said the IED with an Abu Sayyaf signature using ammonium nitrate and improvised shrapnels exploded just a few meters away from where a Scout Ranger was killed in an IED explosion two weeks ago.

The condemned what it said was the rampant, indiscriminate, and irresponsible laying of IEDs that injure not only the military but also the innocent civilians in the area.

The Army urged the community in Sabong to report all suspicious individuals laying IEDs in the area.
