The Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) has warned President Duterte that evicting urban poor families from idle houses they have occupied in Bulacan is not the solution to the country’s homelessness woes.
Kadamay issued the warning after Duterte insisted that the occupation of the housing units in Pandi, Bulacan, 85 percent of which are not occupied by the so-called beneficiaries of the National Housing Authority (NHA), would only aggravate the issue.
Duterte said the occupation of the 87 percent of idle units among the 20,000 overpriced shelters built by government and private developers is “anarchy” that he will not tolerate.
“I will force the issue with eviction,” Duterte declared.
Kadamay said the occupied units will be defended against any form of eviction ordered by Duterte.
NHA has admitted that only 13 percent of around 60,000 housing units built for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel are occupied. (Chito Chavez)
