Imelda proves detractors wrong

JUST A THOUGHT: “Never take a step backward, not even to gain momentum.” – Quoted by Andy Garcia

ENERGIZING ACTORS’ GUILD: Not a few eyebrows were raised when Imelda Papin rose to become the first woman president of the Actors’ Guild, or the Kapisanan ng mga Artista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

The same eyebrows had been lowered following a series of positive developments within the guild, says outgoing president Rez Cortez.

To detractors questioning Imelda’s capability and credentials to head the Guild, Rez had this to say: “I told them, ‘You are the first to complain, but where have you been all this time when the Guild needed you?’

Cortez also explained that Imelda is very much qualified to head the Guild, having been a former member. The legendary singer known nationwide and abroad for her many hit songs had acted in a number of films in the past. She played lead actress in some of them.

What Imelda brings to the table is her vast experience in leadership and her famous sipag at tiyaga, says vice president for external affairs Ricardo Cepeda.

A NIGHT WITH THE STARS: This early, the KAPP has launched a chain of events designed to raise funds for the beleaguered guild. A fund raising concert called “A Night with the Stars” is set on June 3 at the Skydome of SM North EDSA. The show will be star-studded, but of course, featuring, aside from headliner Imelda, more than 30 celebrities, including Victor Wood, Claire de la Fuente, Eva Eugenio, Marco Sison, Patricia Javier, Keanna Reeves, Darius Razon, Emma Cordero, John Nite, Aileen Papin, Garry Cruz, LA Santos, Angelo Carreon, Elizabeth Fronda and many more.

To be performed for the first time in public is the Guild’s first ever theme song, “Artista.”

The song, composed by Garry Cruz and Imelda Papin, honors actors and actresses and their contribution to Philippine arts and culture.

The theme of the multi-faceted Actors Guild celebration is “Sining ko, Pahahalagahan ko.”

SPORTS FEST AND COOPERATIVE: Imelda also announced during a press conference held last week that forthcoming activities to be initiated by the guild soon are a sports festival, a shootfest, and a medical-dental mission.

Members of the KAPP are looking forward to the realization of a long-time dream of theirs, the setting up of a cooperative owned and managed by KAPP. Imelda promised to work on the cooperative as soon as possible.

Officers of the Actors Guild are Amay Bisaya, VP Internal Affairs; Lynn Madrigal, Treasurer; Perry de Guzman, Secretary.

Comprising the Board of Directors are Rez Cortez, Val Iglesias, Boy Roque, Roy Solo, Gerry Roman, Josie Tagle, Jhap Bahian, Jaime Cuales, Joel Ortega.

Jeffrey Santos is Chairman of the Board. (NESTOR CUARTERO)
