Gunman kills Ilocos town mayor, driver

CAMP JUAN, Ilocos Norte – a lone gunman shot and killed a town mayor and his driver during an inspection of a dam project Saturday in Marcos, Ilocos Norte.

Ilocos Norte police provincial office spokesperson Chief Inspector Dexter Corpuz identified the victims as Mayor Arsenio Agustin of Marcos town and his driver Mark Valencia.

After completing the inspection of the dam, Agustin and Valencia were about to proceed to their vehicle when the unidentified gunman came out of a grassy area and mercilessly shot the two.

Responding lawmen and concerned citizens rushed the badly injured mayor and his driver to a nearby hospital where they were later pronounced dead on arrival.

Initial investigation reveals an M-16 rifle was used by the gunman.

Corpuz said that all police stations in the province were conducting checkpoints and dragnet operations to pin down the suspect. (Freddie G. Lazaro)
