Kaya-Makati leaned on Marwin Angeles’ first-half goal before holding off Stallion-Laguna, 1-0, Sunday to grab solo second spot in the Philippines Football League at the University of Makati Field.
Angeles delivered the only goal of the contest in the 40th minute from inside the penalty area that enabled Kaya to remain unbeaten at home while moving two points behind league-leader Meralco-Manila with 10 points through five matches.
The victory came four days after Kaya’s 4-2 win over Ilocos United in Ilocos Sur – the club’s first match away from Metro Manila.
Stallion remained winless after four matches, posting just one point courtesy of a shock 1-all draw with Global-Cebu at home several weeks ago in Biñan, Laguna.
Over at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, goals by David Basa and Kouichi Belgira gave JPV-Marikina a 2-0 victory over Ilocos to jump in third place at nine points.
Basa, the former University of Santo Tomas and national team member, scored the opener shortly before halftime before Belgira doubled the lead for the Japanese-flavored side in the 65th.
It was the third win in five matches for JPV, which has been playing like a team without a home as the refurbishing of the Marikina Sports Complex has yet to be completed.
JPV played its first home match at Rizal Memorial after the previous two was held in Biñan.
