The Alaska Aces spoiled the debut of new Columbian Dyip import John Fields by scoring 42 points in the second quarter on their way to a 134-103 victory last night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Vic Manuel and import Antonio Campbell accounted for half of the Aces’ points in that decisive period while holding the Dyip to just nine on an erratic 18-percent shooting to notch their second straight win after starting the midseason conference with a 109-103 loss to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
Alaska’s second quarter rampage led to a 73-37 halftime lead, turning the remainder of the contest into a virtual scrimmage.
“It was really the second quarter,” said Aces coach Alex Compton, who had a tough time getting into the press room for the customary postgame interview with reporters after he suddenly sustained back spasms in the third quarter.
His injury was perhaps the only drawback in Alaska’s near-perfect performance.
“The entire team played defense, moved the ball well, and forced them to miss some shots that allowed us to get some easy baskets off some of the defensive activities we did,” added Compton.
Manuel scored 26 points on 12-of-17 attempts, most of which were hanging one-handed shots while Campbell delivered 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Chris Banchero capitalized on a strong start with his playmaking skills and attacks to the basket for nine points and 13 assists to help the Aces’ cause.
Columbian dropped to an even 2-2 record, putting to waste Fields’ 39-point, 16-rebound performance in his first match since replacing CJ Aiken.
Fields showed some promise with his defensive presence and athleticism but witnessed the Dyip play their worst performance of the conference after a surprising 2-1 start.
Eric Camson and Reden Celda were the highest local scorers for Columbian with 10 points each.
