Ian Clarino scored a volley in the first half to lead University of the Philippines past University of Santo Tomas, 1-0, Thursday and capture the UAAP men’s football crown at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Clarino, later adjudged as the league’s Most Valuable Player, delivered what could a fitting end to his collegiate career when he struck off a free kick in the 21st minute, enough to give the Maroons their second title in three years.
UP claimed the championship after going unbeaten in 16 matches with 12 victories and four draws.
The Maroons reached the final by defeating the La Salle Green Archers, 1-0, in last week’s Final Four.
UST fell short of winning its first title since 2007 for the fourth time, having lost to Far Eastern University in 2010 and UP in 2011 and 2012.
The Growling Tigers became an unlikely finalist after dethroning the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 1-0, in the Final Four.
