BUTUAN CITY – Five persons were killed while eight others were injured in a collision between two vehicles during a rainy Friday afternoon on the Maharlika Highway in Purok 3, Barangay San Pedro, Alegria, Surigao del Norte.

A sketchy report from the Alegria police said the two vehicles – an Isuzu D-Max pick-up truck with license plates KGN-141 and Mitsubishi Fuzion multi-purpose vehicle with license plates KDP-713 – were on their way to Butuan City from Surigao City when the accident happened at 3:05 p.m.

“Both vehicles were travelling on the same lane heading towards Butuan City when the accident happened,” initial report received by the Police Regional Office 13 here said.

An online report quoting police said that the pick-up truck overtook but bumped the MPV which swerved and rammed a tree.

The pick-up truck crashed into the side of the road and hit a tree then a wall.

According to the report, residents in the area joined hands to rescue the passengers and driver who were pinned inside the MPV and taken to the hospital.
