One of the country’s rising golf stars, Castro recently finished high school at Learning Links Academy in Sta. Rosa, Laguna and is currently in the US for North Carolina’s Freshman Orientation set June 11 to 12.

Since he will be playing for the country in the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games on Aug. 23 to 26 at the Pondok Indah Golf Club, Castro, 17, went to the US earlier to attend to UNC’s early freshman orientation.

“He has to do it earlier because of the Asian Games schedule,” said Aboy Castro, father of Luis who is a former basketball coach and team manager of Gilas Pilipinas during the 2014 World Cup in Spain.

UNC is the same university that produced NBA great Michael Jordan, who likewise plays golf, and former two-time Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III.

Castro made it to the PH team to the Asian Games after topping the six-round qualifying tournament conducted recently by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

Castro tallied 429 – three-under for the tournament.

Also getting a slot was Rupert Zaragoza who finished with a 432. LJ Go – the top amateur in the last Philippine Open – has been seeded by the NGAP.

The fourth member of the national team will be decided by the NGAP via the captain’s pick.

In consideration for the last spot are national team training pool members Aidric Chan, Peter Tyler Po, Carl Corpus and Paolo Wong.
