PH basketball needs archives

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Philippine team coach Yeng Guiao is proposing to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) the creation of databank where game plans, scouting reports and any reference materials will be put for the use of future national coaches.

Guiao said that by sharing information, this will certainly help future coaches who will handle the national team and save time especially when the country is going up against bitter rivals like China and Korea.

By putting up a database, future coaches will somehow have ideas on how to handle the situation unlike he and his staff had suffered, leaving them almost facing a blank wall.

“You are sharing information to future coaches, they’ll just look at the database, incorporate probably to what they’ll be doing. At least they’ll have at least an idea on a particularly team, or player’s tendencies,” said Guiao.

“With that, we were able to help. We’re talking about sharing information that’ll benefit the national team in the future. So what we have here are what we’re going forward to the SBP,” he added.

Guiao has been appointed by the SBP – led by its president Al Panlilio – to handle the national team here, and in the two matches in the FIBA World Cup next month in Iran and in Manila versus Qatar.

Guiao’s proposal was considered as “brilliant move” by no less than multi-titled coach Ryan Gregorio.

“That coach Yeng is proposing is a breakthrough in PH basketball in terms of international competition,” said Gregorio.

Aside from being the chief scout of the team, Gregorio has been appointed Special Assistant to the President (SAP) – Al Panlilio.

“What he wants is to institutionalize scouting reports, even game plans for future reference whoever is the coach of the national team,” said Gregorio, who will organize the formation of the database once the proposal is okayed by SBP.

“So what we’ll basically do is we’ll try to come up with a best game plan possible, save time for the future coach and just check on whatever the past coaches did by using a library or databank of information.”

“That is the best way to help our national team to compete better, be more effective and more efficient,” added Gregorio.

Guiao and his coaching staff’s game plan – including the scouting report – gave the national team a chance to beat China in the elimination round before the ‘Great Wall’ escaped with an 82-80 win, as well as Korea before it was able to deliver its deadly ‘Korean Spell’ with a 91-82 victory in the quarterfinals.
