Centro Escolar University came through with a huge second quarter attack to beat Lyceum-Bantangas, 91-76, for its fifth straight win in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 3 before an expected huge home crowd in Parañaque City.

After a slow start that saw them trail the Pirates 22-20 at the end of the first quarter, the Scorpions erupted for 34 points while holding their rivals to just 14 points for 54-36 halftime lead.

The Scorpions never encountered problem after that as they opened the third quarter with a telling 12-2 run for a commanding 66-38 advantage.

Though the Scorpions slowed down in the fourth, their 44-point buffer in the third proved too big to overcome – thanks to Judelrick Fuentes who exploded for 27 points spiked by seven triples.

Also delivering for the Scorpions were Rich Lorenz Guinitaran, who chipped in 17 points while Dominic Formento and Orlan Wamar combined for 25 points for the Derrick Pumaren-mentored CEU squad.

With the win, CEU finished the first round a 5-1 card in the seven-team tournament.

Their only setback was inflicted by the league-leading Olivarez College, 86-83, in the opener last month.

The Olivarez Sea Lions were playing against the Diliman College Blue Dragons at presstime with the former going for a six-game sweep.

Backing the event are CaféFrance, Yakult, Gerry’s Grill, Hapee Toothpaste, MaxSell Power Tool and Tough Mama Home and Kitchen Appliances, Tanduay Athletics and Toyota Motor Philippines.
