BEIJING – Chinese President Xi Jinping has lauded the robust relations between the Philippines and China despite the conflict in the South China Sea, saying he considers President Duterte a genuine friend and trusted partner.
Xi and Duterte held bilateral talks at the Great Hall of the People Thursday and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the economic and security relations between the two countries.
The Philippine leader is in Beijing for the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation from April 25 to 27 upon the invitation of Xi.
“We’re happy to see that China and Philippine relations are getting better and better,” Xi said in Chinese at the opening of the bilateral meeting with Duterte and his Cabinet members, citing the cooperative ties between the two countries remain “strong.”
“I treat Mr. President a good friend, a genuine friend, and trustful partner,” he said about Duterte.
Xi has also reportedly called for a peaceful settlement of disputes and strengthening of maritime cooperation between the countries.
The Chinese leader also recognized that the Philippine as an important partner in the Belt and Road initiative that focuses on regional economic cooperation and connectivity.
He also extended China’s condolences to the earthquake victims in the Philippines.
President Duterte, in his remarks, has pushed for stronger relations between the Philippine and China, particularly explore other areas of cooperation.
Duterte said the Belt and Road Forum also provides an opportunity “to renew and reaffirm our valued relations based on mutual trust, respect, and friendship.”
He agreed that the Philippine-China relations must continue to grow in strength and meaning in coming years.
“The Philippines and China must continue to work together in exploring areas of cooperation and partnership,” he said. “We look forward to a productive discussion on matters on mutual interest and concern, he told Xi.
The Philippines and China forged two agreements on promoting investment cooperation and drug rehabilitation efforts after the meeting between Duterte and Xi.
These were:
1. Exchange of letters on production capacity and investment cooperation between the Philippines and China.
2. Handover certificate grant-aid for the dangerous drugs abuse treatment and rehabilitation centers project between the Philippines and China. (Genalyn Kabiling)
