MIGHTY SPORTS-GO-FOR-GOLD Philippines was recently honored by the Alumni Association of Xavier School for winning the annual Jones Cup in Taiwan via an 8-game sweep last July.
The team, co-owned by brothers Alex and Caesar Wongchuking of Mighty Sports and Willie Ocier of Go for Gold, won the title for the second time in four years in a dominant way, posting a whopping winning average of almost 22 points a game.
The Wongchukings and Ocier are products of Xavier School.
“We’re thankful to the leadership of AAXS for recognizing our golden feat in Taiwan,” said Alex Wongchuking – himself a former player of the school.
Five former Xavier players were also part of the team with Charles Tiu as head coach, Fritz Dy as manager, and Angelo Wongchuking, Gab Banal and Joseph Yeo among the players in the 12-man roster.
Also present during the awarding rites were Mighty Sports president Dr. John Sy and AAXS officials, led by its president Edgar Gatchalian and Board of Trustees Oliver Gan and Balanzat.
Meantime, University of the Philippines stars Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano will lead Mighty Sports-Go for Gold’s bid in the Dubai Invitational where the Wongchukings and Ociers are hoping to finally hit the jackpot.
Bannered by Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee, the Tiu-mentored team fell short in its title bid, finishing third in the premier club tournament.
Also being considered are Gab Banal, Joseph Yeo, Jarrel Lim and Joaqui Manuel.
