The Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) has lost one of its pioneers in Architect Elmer Pato, who passed away last July 16 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). He was 66.
In a statement, PTA hailed Pato as a major contributor in the growth of the sport and the organization.
“His astute ability in management provided the essential element in propagating taekwondo in the different regions of the country,” the statement said.
“[He] may have passed away, but he will always be remembered as one of the pillars of the Philippine Taekwondo Association.”
The PH taekwondo community, however, is doing fundraising activities for Pato family as Elmer’s wife, Maria Janela, and son Francisco, are reportedly in the intensive care unit after also testing positive of the deadly virus.
Friends of Elmer’s son are also raising funds for the family, as well as officers and instructors of the PTA.
A former member of the national team, Pato won the bronze medal in the 1976 Asian Championships held in Melbourne, Australia.
He also served as an instructor and coach, before becoming PTA Chairman for Regional Affairs, as well as Secretary General and then Vice President of the Philippine Taekwondo Foundation.
Pato is survived with his wife, seven daughters and three sons.
