OUR santol tree had to be cut, and the roots “scooped”. The trunk was not that thick, so I was surprised when I saw the roots – extended beneath the soil, so thick, intricately woven, and sturdy.

IT was a Sunday mass, the first that I attended in a foreign country many years ago. The church-goers’ clothes were so varied that somehow you would realize how culturally diverse New Zealand was (it still is). What I noticed during the communion so amazed me that I wish I had a picture of it.

She was broke when she started working on her first book. It was said that she even had to use a computer in a public library because she did not have her own personal computer. Years later, her book became a series. There are even movie versions. Both are making huge money!
