I could’ve told her the chumminess happens only when they’re not working, for the reality is that beneath the surface of garrulous fraternalization, journalists are expected to work against each other. Either that, or as Ninoy Aquino once gleefully observed without a hint of malice in his voice, journalists tend to be incestuous (which may explain why the romantic alternative is tribal intermarriage, in my opinion).

FROM its title alone, it’s clear that Wonder Woman is a “girl movie” as distinguished from the other kind that appeals to guys. And yet, there I sat in the moviehouse, surrounded by men and boys to the right and left, in front and back of me. No wonder, Wonder Woman has broken opening-day, opening-weekend, Philippine, US and international box-office records.

WHETHER it was a criminal act or an act of terrorism, the death of 37 victims of the “lone gunman” in the Resorts World robbery cum arson was a major tragedy where most of them died by smoke inhalation, preceded by panic and unimaginable terror. Sure, it may not be terrorism as the world defines the word today, but not even the killer’s taking his own life can assuage the grief of the victims’ loved ones.

Pause and pray

IT was a mournful, prayerful time. We prayed for soldiers and policemen fighting in Marawi, the wounded and the dead, for fleeing refugees and suffering residents. We prayed for their safety and ours and the President’s, we prayed for the brave journalists covering the war, and for peace to reign all over our precious, precious islands.
