A FINAL effort to override President Aquino’s veto of the P2,000 Social Security Pension bill failed on the last day of the Sixteenth Congress Monday night. The chamber, on a voice vote, turned down a resolution filed by partylist Rep. Neri Colmenares for it to overturn the veto. House leaders then rejected a call for a nominal vote, saying it would be an exercise in futility, as the Senate had already adjourned.

The Japanese government has adopted two separate disaster plan since 2014. One addresses earthquakes of a magnitude-8 quake directly under Tokyo’s main 23 wards, and the other is originating in the Nankai Trough, which extends for hundreds of kilometers parallel with the Japanese coast. This has triggered six of at least 7.9 in magnitude since 1600.

The current realignment of political forces including the coalitions forged and the assumption of the leadership of both chambers of Congress by allies of incoming President Rodrigo Duterte makes this prospect almost certain.

A NEW name has appeared in military reports of fighting in Mindanao – Maute Group. The Western Mindanao Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines reported the other day that 54 militants identified as members of the Maute Group had been killed in a joint military-police offensive in Lanao del Sur.
