HEAVY traffic is a daily struggle for both commuters and motorist in Metro Manila. The delay and an­noyance that heavy traffic create has been identified as a major cause of road accidents and road rage.

The increasing number of police officers dragged and actually involved in unlawful activities has once again caught the public’s critical eyes. Recent news in radio, television and print told about cops involved in abuse of authority, arrogance, or other felonies. While this may not be the first time that some of our law enforcers were dragged into issues such as corruption and drugs, the problem is highlighted by the irony of police officers violating the same rules they have been tasked to enforce, thus undermining President Duterte’s sincere campaign for positive change in society.

“When it rains, it pours,” as the saying goes. In the weeks that just passed, the southwest monsoon brought heavy rains that submerged various parts of Metro Manila and Luzon. While a number of low-pressure areas and tropical cyclones just breezed us and never actually entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), aggravating habagat was enough to cause great trouble and distress to the people.Thanks to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the weather information they provide to ensure the health and safety of our people.

The decision of the Samahang Basket­bol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to withdraw the participation of the Philippine basketball team in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia shocked Pinoy basketball fans who have long waited to see our players showcase once again the Filipino brand of basketball. All hopes died out when the SBP made the decision final and official through a letter sent to the Indonesian Games Organizing Committee, informing them of the consensus arrived at by the basketball organization.

Charter change rings even louder and clearer as days go by. Our three decades and one-year-old Constitution might need total revi­sion if the fundamental principles of the land are to truly embody the values and aspirations of the Filipino people. The debate over the need for charter change and the urgency of this need has been very extensive, let alone exhaustive. I believe a new constitution that is more attuned to present-day needs is a prerequisite for more meaningful change and de­velopment to take place.
