’70s directors: Vanishing breed

A showbiz insider described the directors of the ‘70s as Vanishing Breed. Gone are Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Joey Gosiengfiao, Mario O’ Hara, Danny Zialcita, Celso Ad Castillo, and Marilou Diaz Abaya. And the latest to go, Gil Portes. Yes, all gone to a stress-free world, where there are no playdates and deadlines to meet.

What’s in a name?

ITH OR WITHOUT – An H that is.
For example with an H is Sarah Geronimo, Pop Princess. Without an H is Sara Duterte, First Daughter and feisty mayor of Davao city.
Also with an H is Sarah Lahbati, actress and sweetheart of Richard Gutierrez, mother to Zion, and Fil-French-Morocan beauty. With an H is activist Leah Navarro, also singer once upon a time. Without an H is Lea Salonga, our very own Broadway star.

PAOLO, PAULO – Paolo as in Paolo Contis (actor), Paolo Duterte (vice mayor of Davao City, elder brother of Sara), Paolo Ballesteros (actor and make-up artist), Paolo Bediones (TV host, by the way, whatever happened to him?).
Paulo as in Paulo Avelino (award winning actor, cast in two upcoming important films, “Larawan” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral”). Also Paulo Serrano (sexy actor).

MAMENG ALL – The following Carmens are all nick-named Mameng. As in Rosales (movie queen) and Soriano, Patena, Camacho, Perina (singers all).
But lately, Carmen Soriano (mother of Lloyd Samartino) has been appearing in GMA teledramas.
Now, really, what’s in a name. A rose by any other name will smell just as sweet.

MAKE IT SHORT – Here are short names.
How about Bea Alonzo and Bea Binene? Or Pia Arroyo Magalona and Pia Pilapil?
More short names: Jo San Diego (legendary announcer) and Jo Estrada (Miss Philippines turned-actress, now based in Virginia, USA). Luz Valdez, Kat de Castro, Liz Alindogan, Lui Manansala (sister of the late Ama Quiambao).
Aga Muhlach, Epy Quizon, Mon Confiado, Gil Cuerva (or the late Gil Portes), Boy Abunda (and the other Boys in media Villasanta, De Guia, Romero), Ian Veneracion, Ina Feleo, Ana Capri (or Roces, Abierra), Dan Alvaro, Ace Espinosa, Jon Avila (back in London where he’s a nurse), Ara Mina (and Bb. Pilipinas Ara Arrida), Wil Revillame, Ate Vi, Ate Guy, Kuya Pip, Kuya Bot, Pie Picache, Ogie Diaz, Jack Roberto.

NAMESAKES – Among actors, namesakes are:
Joey de Leon and Joey Marquez, John Regala and John Estrada, Richard Gomez and Richard Quan, Christopher de Leon and Christopher Roxas, Ricky Davao and Ricky Belmonte, Eric Quizon and Erik Santos (with a K though). Gerald Anderson and Gerald Santos, Jake Vargas and Jake Cuenca, Joseph Marco and Joseph Estrada, Gabby Concepcion and Gabby Eigenmann, Ronnie Ricketts and Ronnie Alonte, Patrick Garcia and Patrick Guzman.

Pause and pray

IT was a mournful, prayerful time. We prayed for soldiers and policemen fighting in Marawi, the wounded and the dead, for fleeing refugees and suffering residents. We prayed for their safety and ours and the President’s, we prayed for the brave journalists covering the war, and for peace to reign all over our precious, precious islands.

‘Direk’ Gil Portes’ cinematic journey

Director Gil Portes’ used to tell me his farewell movie would be titled “The Journey.” It would chronicle his sad journey to claim the body of his younger brother who drowned in Samar… to be brough back to his home town (Pagbilao, Quezon). Along the way, childhood and youthful memories – mostly happy – would come back.
