G-20 shuts out Trump on climate

World powers lined up against US President Donald Trump on climate change, reaffirming their support for international efforts to fight global warming.

US quits climate pact

President Donald Trump declared Thursday he was pulling the U.S. from the landmark Paris climate agreement, striking a major blow to worldwide efforts to combat global warming and distancing the country from its closest allies abroad. Framing his decision as “a reassertion of America’s sovereignty,” Trump said he was “elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

Lights go out in Earth Hour

Iconic global monuments, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France; the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia; the Acropolis in Athens, Greece; and the Opera House in Sydney, Australia plunged into darkness Saturday to mark Earth Hour and draw attention to climate change.

The Philippines had a key role in the Paris conference that ended with the adoption of the Climate Change agreement in December, 2015. The country led a Climate Vulnerable Forum campaign to limit the rise in global temperature to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius, not just 2 degrees as was ultimately decided in the conference. As the Philippines had been hit by the strongest typhoon ever to hit land – Yolanda in November, 2013 – its suffering was seen as a warning to the rest of the world.
