China asked to operate 3rd telco firm in PH

President Duterte has asked China to become the third telecommunications operator in the country, Malacañang said yesterday.

China said on Tuesday that it has the right to construct necessary defensive facilities on its own territory after a US think tank said Beijing was able to deploy warplanes on artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea any time.

The Department of National Defense yesterday released pictures showing what it said were Chinese boats near the disputed Scarborough or Panatag Shoal in the South China Sea, also known as West Philippine Sea, just hours before Southeast Asian nations were due to meet China’s premier at a summit in Laos.
