While reading a press release from QCinema 2017 (Oct. 19 to 28 ), this columnist is glad to learn that one of the films being shown is 1981’s “High School Scandal,” directed by Gil Portes, penned by Tony Perez, and topbilled by Gina Alajar, Sandy Andolong, Ting Jocson, and Greggy Liwag.

The Eddys: A night to remember

In fulfillment of its goal to help further unite the local movie industry, the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd) that gave out the awards, did not discriminate between indie and mainstream films and actors. This is the reason the results truly surprised (including members of the group who only found out the winners same time as everyone else) and got key people reviewing, debating them. It is hoped this would merit underrated but quality works a second look, heighten appreciation for geniuses already validated and honored that night, and embolden similar players to focus unflinchingly on excellence.

Helen Gamboa used to be known as Helen of Song, popular recording artist in the ‘60s and then musical star on the big screen. From singing and dancing idol, she turned into an award-winning actress, Urian and FAMAS best actress for Tikoy Aguiluz’s version of “Flor Contemplacion” and Maning Borlaza’s “Araw-Araw, Gabi-Gabi,” respectively.
