Alert researcher helped stem global cyberattack

The cyberattack that spread malicious software around the world, shutting down networks at hospitals, banks, and government agencies, was thwarted by a young British researcher and an inexpensive domain registration, with help from another 20-something security engineer in the US.

Global internet security firm Trend Micro reported that different malware (malicious software) activities in the Philippines alone reach an average of five billion threats. Around 30% of the total threats, or 1.5 billion, are actual reported attacks among internet users. Most of the threats are said to be from social networking sites in the guise of sensationalized scams.
