Strengthening Angat Dam, Metro’s source of water

MAYON Volcano’s continued activity reminds us that we are in a part of the planet that is under constant pressure from forces beneath the earth’s surface that could explode in deadly violence at any time. It has now been weeks since Mayon erupted with ash clouds and sent rivers of lava flowing down to communities at its base.

MOTORISTS and commuters travelling along Epifanio de los Santos Ave. (EDSA) and other traditionally grid-locked roads in Metro Manila noted in the last few days some improvement in the traffic and it soon became apparent that it was because the government had started a campaign against unroadworthy vehicles.

Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legaspi sailed into the bay in 1565 and by 1571 he had established the Spanish city of Manila which, in the next 350 years, served as the center of Spanish civil, military, religious, and commercial activity in the islands.
