PH, MILF resume talks in Malaysia

The Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front formally resumed talks by launching the implementing phase of the Bangsamoro peace accord yesterday.

The push for a constitutional convention was among the topics of the meeting with incoming president Rodrigo R. Duterte and leaders of the Moro National Liberation Front and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front Friday night, according to MNLF chair Abul Khayr Alonto.

A NEW name has appeared in military reports of fighting in Mindanao – Maute Group. The Western Mindanao Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines reported the other day that 54 militants identified as members of the Maute Group had been killed in a joint military-police offensive in Lanao del Sur.

AMONG the changes the nation is looking forward to as the Duterte administration begins its term is an end to the decades-long rebellion of the New People’s Army (NPA). The outgoing Aquino administration sought to end the Moro conflict in Mindanao with peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) but made no effort to reach out to the NPA.
