Some changes to look forward to

Big changes are expected in government policy and operations. It was, after all, because of his promise of change that President-elect Duterte won by a big margin over the other, more traditional, presidential candidates. His campaign against crime, especially drugs, will begin immediately, if only to meet the three to six-month deadline he set for himself during the election campaign. This should be accompanied by a cleanup in police ranks as the drug problem in particular is believed to have grown to what it is today because of either police connivance or tolerance.

It has been over a week since we trooped to the polls to exercise our sovereign right to elect our leaders. Despite reports of election-related violence in some areas, authorities have declared the May, 2016, elections generally peaceful.

It would have been best if all the presidential candidates had come to attend the mass celebrated by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle at the Manila Cathedral last Monday, May 2, even if only for the symbolic unity they would have presented to the nation at this time of such great discord and conflict in the closing days of the election campaign.
