US in direct talks with North Korea

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson acknowledged on Saturday that the United States is maintaining direct channels of communications with North Korea even as tensions rise over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and the countries’ leaders spar through bellicose name-calling.

A UNITED States Navy destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, carried out last week what the US calls a “Freedom of Navigation Operation” (FNO) in the South China Sea. It passed within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built by China on Mischief Reef in the Spratly Island group.
