Manila, Philippines – An Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) was found dead in her rented apartment in Doha, Qatar with a rope tied around her neck, a Filipino migrant rights watchdog said in a belated report yesterday.
Noel Tolentino, secretary general of the Samahan ng mga Migranteng Mangagagawa sa Qatar (SAMMAQA), a Migrante International chapter in Doha, identified the OFW as Edilyn Buno Mirasol, 28, from Tagum, Davao City.
She was deployed last year to work as a secretary and accountant for a local contracting company in Doha. A fellow OFW and flat-mate found Mirasol’s body on September 4.
According to Tolentino, a week after the death of Mirasol, the OFW who reported the incident to the police and three other Filipinos were investigated by the police.
“The four OFWs were invited by the security police in Mogalina, Doha for questioning that started from 6 p.m. of September 10 and lasted until 1 a.m. the following day,” Tolentino said.
Three of them were later temporarily released. The fourth, a male OFW co-worker, is still detained since, based on witnesses, he was the last person seen accompanying Mirasol. (Roy C. Mabasa)
