Manila, Philippines – A gold trader and a businessman were the latest “victims” of the Run-After-Tax-Evaders (RATE) campaign of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares named the respondents in separate complaints filed yesterday before the Department of Justice as Richelle Soriano Leonardo of Meycuayan, Bulacan and Fritz Migallen Eradiano.
Records showed that Ms. Leonardo sold gold worth P2 billion to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in 2009, but did not report the sale to the BIR and paid the corresponding income tax.
She was assessed to owe the BIR more than P1.2 billion including fines and surcharges which constitute more than 50 percent of the tax due.
On the other hand, Erediano faces charges of tax evasion for his alleged refusal to settle the more than P22 million deficiency valueadded tax incurred in 2006. (Jun Ramirez)
