Believing RR Garcia has what it takes to become a future superstar, Globalport yesterday signed the former UAAP MVP from Far Eastern University to a three-year contract worth almost P9 million.
According to Globalport team manager BJ Manalo, 5-11 Garcia will receive P150,000 and 225,000 in the first two years – both maximum – but will get only P337.5 in the final year of his contract.
A maximum for a third year pro is pegged at P420,000. “We believe in his talent that’s why we gave him a three-year contract,” said Globalport owner Mikee Romero. “He’s the future of the team.”
Garcia was drafted No. 6 overall during the PBA Rookie Draft last Sunday.
Globalport is still negotiating with Terrence Romeo – the team’s No. 5 pick. Manalo, however, is confident
they can reach a deal today.
He also disclosed that they signed former MVP Eric Menk to a one-year deal.
“We need somebody who can defend against tall players like Greg (Slaughter of Ginebra) and June Mar (Fajardo of Petron),” added Romero.
Though no longer as sharp and agile he was when he won the coveted MVP plum in 2005, Romero believes he can help stabilize the team’s defense.
“He’s still in the level to give us major minutes but he will be patient as he admitted that he still needs to get his game shape.
