Elliot Tan scored 17 points and had five assists while Jan Colina sparked a third quarter charge that powered Jumbo Plastic to an 86-72 victory over Boracay Rum yesterday in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Trinity University of Asia gym.
“The guys were very agitated today after losing badly to NLEX last weeks. I thought we played smart today,” offered Jumbo Plastic coach Steven Tiu.
“Jan (Colina) was exceptionally well today. He was all over the court. The way he played today was really beyond our expectation.”
After a relatively silent first half, Colina, an undersized forward, picked up his rhythm in the third and led the Giants breakaway. He scored eight points when the Giants opened the period with a 13-3 run to stretch a six-point halftime lead to 45-29.
Colina eventually finished with 16 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds, had one assist, four steals and one block in a stellar 30-minute job.
In the other game, Jericho Cruz tallied 31 points as Blackwater Sports subdued Derulo Accelero, 94-80, to enhance their bid for a playoff berth.
Allan Mangahas scored 17 and had seven assists while Gio Ciriacruz added 11 for the Elite who survived repeated rallies by the Oilers in the second half to notch their sixth win in nine games.
Derulo Accelero picked up its 10th defeat in 11 games.
“This is a big game for us. I thought this win assured us a spot in the quarterfinals,” Tiu said.
The Giants improved to 9-3 (win-loss) record. They wind up their elimination round campaign against Cebuana Lhuillier on Thursday.
Another victory on Thursday, Tiu said, would likely relegate the Giants to either third or fourth place and a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarters.
Jumbo Plastic also got big games from Karl Dehesa (14 points), Harold Arboleda (12 points) and Harry Petilos, who went 3 of 9 from 3-point range in the first half to get things going for the Giants.
Marion Magat came off the bench and pulled down 12 rebounds as Jumbo Plastic gained a 46-41 advantage off the glass.
The loss snapped Boracay Rum’s three game winning run and ended the Waves’ quarterfinal aspirations.
