If everything falls into place, Manny Pacquiao will become the first awardee from boxing to win the Prince of Asturias award that is backed by Spanish Royal Family.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) bared yesterday that the government agency has nominated Pacquiao in the field of sports, PSC executive director Guillermo Iroy said.
The formal letter of nomination was forwarded to the PSC by the Department of Foreign Affairs through the Office of European Affairs.
The awards event is just a part of the Prince of Asturias Foundation, “a non-profit private institution whose essential aims are to consolidate the existing links between the Principality and the Prince of Asturias and to contribute to extolling and promoting those scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of the universal heritage of humanity,” according to its website.
The foundation also gives out awards in the field of arts, humanities, social sciences and humanities.
An awardee gets a Joan Miro sculpture reprsenting and symbolising the award, a cash price of Euro 50,000, a diploma and an ainsignia. (Nick Giongco and Clyde Mariano)
