Rain or Shine is giving No. 2 overall draft pick Kevin Alas a three-year maximum contract, according to co-owner Raymond Yu.
“I think during the last PBA Rookie Draft, as far as skills is concerned he is the second best player available. That’s why we took him with the second overall pick,” said Yu in a phone interview.
“Of course, I don’t want to pressure him, but in due time he will be a major contributor to the success of the team,” added Yu, whose team also selected three rookies, Jericho Cruz of Adamson, Kevin Espinosa of Mapua and Mike Gamboa from University of the Philippines.
Alas is expected to meet the ROS officials today to sign the contract, but a source said details of the contract are not yet final.
While the 6-foot-1 Alas stands to receive P1.8 million on the first year of the deal (P150,000 monthly), and P2.7 million on the second year (P225,000 monthly), it’s still up in the air whether it’s P350,000 salary for him or the maximum P420,000 pay on the third and final year.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old Alas said he’s excited to formally play for Rain or Shine, saying: “Happy of course that finally I’ll officially be part of the ROS family, and also the PBA. Even though I’m a rookie, my teammates are treating me already as family since after practice we go out together to eat.”
