Ginebra’s Emman Monfort and Globalport’s Terrence Romeo came to blows yesterday during their tune up game at the Green Meadows Gym in Quezon City.
Players from both sides entered the court but the so-called cooler heads prevented the fight from becoming a full-blown melee.
Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa and Globalport’s Kelly Nabong were among those who entered the court. The players, however, were mainly pushing and cursing each other.
The game was discontinued after the incident.
“Si Terrence and Emman lang naman ang talagang nagpang-abot, yung iba, tulakan lang naman. Pero naawat din,” said a source, who asked not to be named.
The incident was triggered when Romeo made a jumper against Monfort. As he ran back towards Ginebra’s basket, the Ginebra guard appeared to have tripped the Globalport shooting guard.
Thinking it was a deliberate action, Romeo went after Monfort and the two traded punches.
Since the game is supervised by the PBA, Commissioner Chito Salud is expected to summon the players involved in the incident. Fines are also expected to be handed down.
The two teams are using the tune-up game as part of their preparation for the Commissioners Cup which starts on Jan. 27.
Both Batang Pier and the Kings played with no reinforcements. Globalport import CJ Leslie will arrive Monday while Ginebra has yet to announce the name of its import.
