Cagayan Valley made five 3-point shots in the first quarter and the Rising Suns pulled away for 73-57 victory against Jumbo Plastic on Monday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Abel Galliguez scored 11 of his game-high 14 points in the first half as the Rising Suns got their game going early. Andrian Celeda tallied 13 and Jason Melano added 12 for the Cagayan Valley which snapped a two-game skid.
“The guys followed our game plan to the letter and got everybody involved. I thought our defense also held up,” observed Cagayan Valley team consultant Arturo Valenzona.
The Rising Suns dominated the game throughout, led by as many 27 points and avoided a fourth quarter meltdown that ruined their two games.
“I thought the guys learned their lessons from those two defeats. They never showed signs of complacency. Hopefully, they could keep it up,” Valenzona said. Cagayan Valley improved to 2-2 (win-loss) record to move into a tie with Jumbo Plastic, AMA University and Kera Mix at third place.
Cagayan Valley took a 19-6 advantage on turnover points as Rising Suns forced the Giants to 23 miscues with their man-to-man defense.
Dennis Villamor finished with 14 points to share scoring honors, but he was the only player in double figure for Jumbo Plastic, which had its two-game winning run snapped.
Galliguez, who went 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, nailed his third trey late in the first quarter to give Cagayan Valley its first double-digit lead at 22-11. As a team, Cagayan Valley shot 9 of 16 from 3-point range.
