Reigning UAAP champion National University claimed the first the twice-to-beat privilege by downing Blackwater even as University of the East posted its first back-to-back wins in the Smart-PCABL (Pilipinas Chinese Amateur Basketball League) Dickies Women’s Cup held recently at the Philippine Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
The Lady Bulldogs, who defended their UAAP crown undefeated, leaned on the clutch shooting of Gemma Miranda, Jack Animan and Annick Tiky in the payoff period to score a 73-65 win over the Lady Elite and extend their winning streak to four games.
Tiky scored four of her 14 points in the fourth frame to tie Trixie Antiquera for the scoring honors while Afril Bernardino and Miranda chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, as NU survived Blackwater’s fightback.
The Lady Warriors, on the other hand, drew 25 points from Eunique Chan and 16 from Ruth Tacula to hack out a 70-61 win over Adamson-Mighty Sports in the event also sponsored by Advanced Solution Inc., Powerhouse, CW Home Depot, Dickies Underwear, Hapee Toothpaste and Jumbo Plastic Linoleum.
Multi-titled Centro Escolar University bounced back from a shock 55-49 defeat to UE last week by outlasting Far Eastern University, 66-58, thanks to Janine Pontejas’ 26-point shot.
With Katrina Castillo burying four triples, La Salle also beat Adamson, 83-70, to tie UE, CEU, FEU and Adamson at 2-2. Castillo finished with 18 markers.
