National University scored a 115-58 win over University of Perpetual Help in the 9th PCABL (Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League) FREEGO Cup last Tuesday at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City.
John Clemente scored 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting aside from registering 9 rebounds, four assists and one steal in leading the NU Bullpups to their second straight win since their shocking 78-76 loss to the University of the Philippines Junior Maroons in the opener.
Three other NU players scored in twin digits with Rhayyan Amsali completing a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards while Paul Manalang and Karl Penano combining for 25 markers.
The reigning UAAP champions were so dominant that seven other players scored six points or more and they practically settled the issue after just two quarters as they took a commanding 62-29 advantage.
Meanwhile, Hope Christian High School finally barged into the win column after dropping its first two games with a 92-42 drubbing of St. Jude Catholic School in the tournament also sponsored by Smart, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste, Insular Square (Cebu), and New Pioneer Auto Supply (Cebu).
Coming off a stinging 88-86 loss to Arellano University last Saturday, Hope Christian, with Francis Sacundo and Mac Jacob at the helm, used a hot start to disarm the Judenites as they padded their 28-10 first quarter lead to 54-20 entering the second half.
Also posting its first win was Far Eastern University which outlasted San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 68-62, thanks to the inspired performances of Eric Jabel (17 points) and Jack Gloria (14 pts.)
Aside from Clemente, other players who earned Freego Player of the Game awards were Jabel and Sacundo.
