Foton’s Cherry Rondina and Patty Orendain soared to two victories yesterday in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup at the Sands SM by the Bay in Pasay City.
Rondina, a sophomore indoor player for University of Santo Tomas, and Orendain, a graduate of University of St. La Salle, hardly broke a sweat in disposing of Accel Quantum Plus’ Aileen Abuel and Princess Listana, 21-3, 21-7, to start their title campaign on a bright note.
Pairing up for the first time, Rondina and Orendain, then, earned a free victory after Mapua’s Shaira Hermano and Niella Ramilo withdrew from the tournament.
“Medyo nag-aadjust pa rin kami ni Cherry. Ilang beses pa lang kasi kaming tumutungtong sa buhangin,” said Orendain, who was a runner-up finisher last year with former partner Fiola Ceballos.
Norie Jane Diaz, the other half of last year’s champion pair, also lived up to her billing with new partner Pau Soriano for Standard Insurance Navy A with a hard-earned 21-18, 24-22 triumph over RC Cola Army B’s Jennie Delos Reyes and Genie Sabas.
Delos Reyes and Sabas earlier won over University of the East’s Angelica Dacaymat and Jasmine Alcayde, 21-18, 21-13.
