RC Cola-Army completed a title sweep in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup as it dislodged Foton, 21-18, 18-21, 15-13 yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
The veteran pair of Jovelyn Gonzaga and Nene Bautista were simply too much for last year’s champion Patty Orendain and UAAP beach volleyball star Cherry Rondina as they overcame a three point deficit in the third set to claim the title.
It was an amazing start for the favorites as they came out firing in the first set to dictate the tone of the match early on.
But the power hitting duo found themselves down 9-6 in the deciding set after a huge second set from Rondina. But errors from Foton and the steady play of the duo allowed Army to ice the game for good.
Before the championship run, they also walloped Petron, 21-11 21-15, which is being bannered by fan favorites Aiza Maizo and Bang Pineda.
Foton came through to the finals by scoring a come from behind victory over Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza of FEU-Petron, 15-21, 21-13, 15-11.
Pons and Atienza would go on to win the battle of third, 21-12, 21-13.
Meanwhile, TVM’s Kris Guzman and Anthony Arbasto is still playing the Philippine Navy A pair od Nur-amin Madsairi and Roldan Medino for the title as of press time. (Christian Jacinto)
