Sorsogon City, Sorsogon – Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon province spewed ashes anew that drifted to the town of Juban, yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Ed Laguerta, Phivolcs resident volcanologist based in Albay, said the phreatic explosion that occurred at about 11:35 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. come from a shallow source.
Due to fair weather, Lagueta said the phreatic explosion was clearly seen two-kilometer high thick grayish to white clouds.
Laguerta said “no human activity” has been prohibited inside the four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) due to possible rock falls brought by the explosion.
He also warned LGUs to provide safety measures especially on roads affected by ash falls.
“Yung unang biktima ng Pinatubo eruption ay aksidente sa kalsada kasi madulas ‘yung daan dala ng mga abong ibinuga ng bulkan. Delikado pag nabasa ‘yung abo dahil madulas ‘yun para sa mga sasakyan,” sabi ni Laguerta.
Laguerta said yesterday’s phreatic explosion was the 2nd after the explosion last February 22.
Senior Supt. Ronaldo Cabral, Sorsogon police director, said the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (SPDRRMC), together with the Philippine Army and Philippine National Police, are distributing facemasks and towels to the barangays affected by ash fall. (Niño N. Luces)
