Actress Liza Soberano has said that Marvel comics fans wanted her to play the leading lady in the next “Spider-Man” film but clarified reports that there was really no formal invitation from Hollywood producers to appear in the new superhero movie.
Soberano, star of the Kapamilya primetime teleserye “Dolce Amore,” made the clarification following reports that she will portray Mary Jane Watson in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” which will be shown in July 2017.
“It’s not really an invitation. I think it was what the fans (of Marvel) wanted,” Soberano said, in an interview by ABS-CBN, as tweeted by Star Cinema.
“All my fans started retweeting it and everything, but wala naman po talagang invitation,” she said.
Soberano, 18, said that she will accept the role if there’s really an offer. “I would love that to cast as Mary Jane. That would be a nice opportunity.’’
Enrique Gil, screen partner of Soberano in the teleserye, said that he would support Soberano if there was really an offer.
“If it’s a good opportunity para sa kanya, go na go ako. Tamang-tama, ’yung mom n’ya, favorite superhero si Spider-Man. So malapit sa puso n’ya si Spider-Man,” Gil added.
Actress Kirsten Dunst portrayed the role of Mary Jane Watson in three “Spider-Man” series from 2002 to 2007.
But in the two succeeding Spider-Man films – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) – producers have dropped the part of Mary Jane Watson and focused on Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone.
Stacy is Watson’s rival for the affection of Parker.
Sony Pictures had originally planned “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” to be shown on July 10, 2016.
The latest “Spider-Man” installment will focus on young Peter Parker as the superhero who fights crime in high school.
So far, the cast for the new superhero film is not yet complete. English actor Tom Holland plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He was introduced in the blockbuster film “Captain America: Civil War” recently.
Hollywood stars Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei have also been cast in the forthcoming movie.
