DAVAO CITY – The push for a constitutional convention was among the topics of the meeting with incoming president Rodrigo R. Duterte and leaders of the Moro National Liberation Front and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front Friday night, according to MNLF chair Abul Khayr Alonto.
“The milf and mnlf are united in solidarity with the President Elect,” Alonto said.
However, the group still needs to reach out to former MNLF leader Nur Misuari.
“Well, that is our problem. There is only one MNLF. We will be talking about that. and hopefully, in the next weeks, we will be talking about that,” Alonto said.
“It’s not only about reaching out. We were together, we are still together. Without prejudice to the charges filed against Misuari, and we will talk to him in this aspect.”
Alonto said the initial consensus was a push for a constitutional convention, after Duterte’s initial conferences with his counterparts at the House of Representatives who are also incoming officials.
“In fact all of us are committed to that that there will be a change of government through a constitutional convention,” he said.
However, it was not clear whether the talks yielded final timelines.
Alonto said the ironing out of the details will come after Duterte swears in as president. (YAS OCAMPO)
